Lonnie Bunkley's legacy as a visionary leader in Los Angeles traces back to his tenure as Director of the Los Angeles County Probation Department in the 1970s. It was during this pivotal period that he recognized the pressing need for community development amidst the challenges posed by the emergence of ‘the war on drugs’ and the proliferation of gangs. Witnessing the profound impact of these issues on the infrastructure of LA's working-class neighborhoods, Lonnie embarked on a mission to empower these communities through economic revitalization.  Lonnie’s first investment properties were multi-family buildings in South Los Angeles.

In collaboration with fellow community leaders who shared a similar commitment to working class people of Los Angeles, Lonnie spearheaded initiatives to foster the growth of commercial spaces, providing essential avenues for local entrepreneurs and residents to thrive. By strategically investing in neglected areas, he ensured that working-class dollars remained within the community, catalyzing a cycle of economic empowerment. Lonnie's reputation as a trailblazer in community development attracted national credit tenants, thereby generating crucial tax revenues reinvested back into the neighborhoods.

In 1996, Lonnie laid the foundation for Bunkley Investment & Management, driven by a commitment to provide comprehensive acquisitions, development, and property management advisory services. Over the ensuing three decades, Lonnie's visionary leadership propelled the company to execute impactful projects across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Today, Bunkley Investment remains a testament to Lonnie's enduring legacy, exemplifying a family-run enterprise dedicated not only to financial success but also to community enrichment.

Retiring in the early 2010s, Lonnie proudly passed the torch to his three daughters, who continue to steward the company's growth and uphold its core values. Bunkley Investment's portfolio of multi-family and commercial spaces continues to expand, embodying Lonnie's vision of sustainable development and social responsibility. 

Lonnie's remarkable journey is chronicled in his book, "Journey to Freedom," which traces eight generations of the Bunkley family's resilience in the face of adversity. From slavery and emancipation to triumph over discrimination, the Bunkley family's story serves as a source of inspiration and empowerment for generations to come.

Yoshiko Plair's journey in finance commenced in the esteemed halls of Arthur Andersen LLC, where she honed her expertise in internal audit. Over the course of 15 years in corporate accounting, Yoshiko garnered invaluable experience and insights that would later shape her role as a key leader in her family's legacy.

Driven by a deep-rooted commitment to her father's mission, Yoshiko transitioned into the role of Vice President at Bunkley Investment & Management, joining forces with her family to make a meaningful impact in communities. Drawing upon her early experiences in the nonprofit sector, where she witnessed firsthand the transformative power of community-driven initiatives, Yoshiko embraced her new role with passion and purpose.

In the early 2000s, Yoshiko assumed the mantle of Chief Financial Officer, entrusted with the critical responsibility of overseeing the company's financial operations. With her astute financial acumen and unwavering dedication, she plays a pivotal role in steering the company towards sustainable growth and success.

Karen Bunkley's journey in advocacy began in the early 1990s, where she dedicated herself to providing resources and education in AIDS advocacy to vulnerable communities in the North Carolina area. With a heart for social justice and a commitment to empowering marginalized groups, Karen's early career laid the foundation for her lifelong dedication to community service.

In the early 2000s, Karen's path led her to her father's company, where she embarked on a new chapter of her professional journey. Today, she serves as the Director of The Bunkley Foundation, an organization close to her heart, dedicated to providing scholarships and resources to Black college students in Los Angeles.

Under Karen's leadership, The Bunkley Foundation has become a beacon of hope and opportunity for aspiring scholars, empowering them to pursue higher education and achieve their dreams. Her unwavering dedication to educational equity and social impact drives the foundation's initiatives, ensuring that underserved communities have access to the support and resources they need to thrive.
